PS3 Folding List, Add your name, if you fold on PS3!

Postby Phantom » Mon Sep 21, 2009 10:10 pm

Just trying to start a list of resources that new members and visitors could contact if they were trying to fold with their PS3...

Please respond to this topic along with any details concerning your PS3 folding...  Date Started folding on PS3?  Which PS3 client are you using?  Settings?  "Watch out for" Guidance?

Just think about what might help a new PS3 folder get up and running smoothly.

Thanks!

PS3 Folding List, Add your name, if you fold on PS3!

Postby 314159 » Tue Sep 22, 2009 6:11 am

Well - I have successfully completed over 7000 PS3 work units.

Began around the time that this client first became available.

I am using the most current OS version and most current F@H client (the version numbers escape me since I do not pay much attention to them).

Setting is in "expert mode".

Mine run 24/7 and are dedicated folders for now.
I think that turning them on and off frequently lessens their life.
I am NOT wireless and did experience some problems when I had them originally set up as such.
They are all CAT6 at present and haven't missed a beat since.

During the entire time that I have folded with them, only one deadline was missed during an extended power outage.
According to the F@H statistics (details are easily accessible on each machine and folding is not interrupted while you nose around), only 14 WUs of the 7000+ did not receive credit and ALL of these were during my wireless venture.

A PS3 will produce almost exactly 900 ppd.  WUs have minimal variability, if any, from this 900 ppd level.

The original PS3's were not particularly "green" in terms of energy consumption.

The new model, now available just about everywhere for $299.00 uses a different processor die and is said to be more efficient.  I have not put one of these on a watt meter yet.

I also have experience updating an internal hard drive for these (easily accomplished).
I have repaired what was "professionally" (note quotes) diagnosed as a dead and useless machine and reinstalled the PS3 OS from a FAT64 formatted CD after downloading it on my wife's Win laptop.

I know of another PS3 folder whom I hope will share his experience in this thread.

I would be happy to assist anyone with a PS3 with any problems, or respond to any questions.

There is, of course, no guaranty that I will have ALL or ANY of the answers. :p

Also running a PS3, its one of the older 40GB versions. I got it second hand from a friend when the Blu-ray drive died. I haven't looked at what PPD its getting, but I would think it'd be roughly the same as any other PS3.

What a great way to recycle!  (No wasted PS3 there!)

PS3 Folding List, Add your name, if you fold on PS3!

Postby jecrawford » Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:02 am

I fold on 5 PS3s, four of which I bought as "Faulty 40 Gb" on eBay. They all run 24hrs/day with the latest software from Sony and in "advanced" mode.

I also fold on a G4 iBook, a 24" iMac, a Mac mini and an Al MacBook.

Actually I logged on to see if there had been any problems sending WUs to Stanford. For the last 12 to 14 hours nothing was being transmitted upstream. It would seem that all 5 PS3s could not reach the internet, eventhough all my Macs were working OK. One of the PS3s quoted the following error message: DNS error.(80710102). I fiddled around and logged it onto a different Airport Express (I have 4 of them scattered over three floors) and it all sprang back to life.

Any comments would be welcome. Please move this to a more appropriate thread if you wish.

I also have a PS3 folding.  80GB model that I picked up a year and a half ago.  I have no idea how many WU's it has done as I have had to uninstall and reinstall F@H on it a couple times.  I know it is over 2000 though.  :)

PS3 Folding List, Add your name, if you fold on PS3!

On Feb 07 I started Folding 24/7 on my first PS 3 60 Gig model – it died on Sep 09 and was replaced by a 80 Gig model. Running Expert setting and have it setup on my Airport network and connected to my Home Theater APC Smart UPS 1500. It faithfully processes four WUs per day.
