Well - I have successfully completed over 7000 PS3 work units.
Began around the time that this client first became available.
I am using the most current OS version and most current F@H client (the version numbers escape me since I do not pay much attention to them).
Setting is in "expert mode".
Mine run 24/7 and are dedicated folders for now.
I think that turning them on and off frequently lessens their life.
I am NOT wireless and did experience some problems when I had them originally set up as such.
They are all CAT6 at present and haven't missed a beat since.
During the entire time that I have folded with them, only one deadline was missed during an extended power outage.
According to the F@H statistics (details are easily accessible on each machine and folding is not interrupted while you nose around), only 14 WUs of the 7000+ did not receive credit and ALL of these were during my wireless venture.
A PS3 will produce almost exactly 900 ppd. WUs have minimal variability, if any, from this 900 ppd level.
The original PS3's were not particularly "green" in terms of energy consumption.
The new model, now available just about everywhere for $299.00 uses a different processor die and is said to be more efficient. I have not put one of these on a watt meter yet.
I also have experience updating an internal hard drive for these (easily accomplished).
I have repaired what was "professionally" (note quotes) diagnosed as a dead and useless machine and reinstalled the PS3 OS from a FAT64 formatted CD after downloading it on my wife's Win laptop.
I know of another PS3 folder whom I hope will share his experience in this thread.
I would be happy to assist anyone with a PS3 with any problems, or respond to any questions.
There is, of course, no guaranty that I will have ALL or ANY of the answers.
